§ We came to this world to LIVE OUT LOUD!

How I Managed Major Anxiety on My Roadtrip

Jul 14, 2020

Armed with face masks, gloves, plastic face shields and tons of hand sanitizer, I’ve spent the past nine days road tripping from Florida to Washington DC with my oldest daughter.
Truth to tell, I was scared to go on a road trip. The United States has some of the highest rates of COVID-19 in the world and it’s downright scary to see how many people refuse to wear masks in public or social distance.
Going on a road trip seemed foolhardy in some respects, yet I desperately needed a break from the monotony of daily life and the family dynamics of the five of us stuck in a house far from home together.

Plus, my oldest and I had planned to visit universities this summer and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit a few with her. Zoom video tours just can’t compare to walking around campus, imagining her life there for four years.

So we planned ahead to be as safe as possible to hit the open road.

The freedom was exhilarating! Seeing old friends and spending time with my seventeen-year old were priceless!

Yet I felt my anxiety return like it hadn’t in a long time. I found myself edgy and extra nervous as we navigated social distancing with friends who didn’t seem as concerned with social distancing. Not to mention keeping six feet away from people on the streets of Savannah, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Charleston.

“What do you expect? Other people want to be out too!”  screamed my inner critic.

“Can’t they wear masks though and keep us all safe?”  I retorted.

I could feel my anxiety escalate.

But here’s the bottom line: I chose this experience and I was determined to make the most of it. What’s the point is I wasn’t even going to enjoy it?
I realized yet again, that I have great tools to handle anxiety.
And I used them.
And they worked.
Our anxiety often tells us that we are too busy or too stressed to use the tools to make ourselves feel better. Anxiety wants to survive too. But it’s a fallacy.

You can make yourself feel better and manage your stress, fear and anxiety!

My tools have worked great for me and the thousands of people I have taught them to.
