Let’s talk about hormones…
You know you’re in perimenopause when you are out with friends at happy hour and you find yourself comparing hormone levels from you latest lab tests.
This happened to me just this past week. I hadn’t been out for drinks with the ladies in quite a while. It was a mixed-age group and while some of the younger women at our table talked about relationships, work and other happenings, I found myself huddled in the corner with a woman in her 50s comparing our estrogen and progesterone levels. We even pulled up our latest test results on our phoned to better compare notes.
It sounds funny, but the truth is that most women in their 40’s and 50’s suffer from various symptoms caused by hormones: hot flashes, night sweats, foggy brain, weight gain, low libido, poor sleep, thinning hair, anxiety and depression, etc.
And beyond the immediate symptoms, there are the longer-term consequences of declining hormones: increased heart disease and degenerative health issues, osteoporosis, etc.
No wonder we really start to care about our hormones as we get into our 40’s. What can be more important than feeling good and protecting our health?
When my hormonal symptoms started to emerge several years ago, I was utterly confused by the conflicting information available. Was hormone replacement therapy good for me or bad for me? Could I handle my symptoms with dietary changes? Herbs? Supplements? Mindset work? Were natural remedies enough to protect my long-term health?
I had no idea and I began to search for answers.
